Lachlan applied for the inaugural Fulbright Professional Playwriting Scholarship to enable him to travel to the USA and work with The American Conservatory Theatre [ACT] in San Francisco. He plans to create a brand new play in collaboration with staff and MFA students at this leading theatre institution. Hopefully that new play will subsequently premiere at ACT and will then be produced further in the United States, Australia and beyond.
Lachlan nominated San Francisco because he already has established a connection with artists and theatre companies in this city. In 2010 his play Silent Disco won The Global Age Project at Aurora Theatre, Berkeley. This prize is awarded to a playwright who creates a text which deals with the impact of technology on contemporary life. Aurora flew him over for a public reading of the play. There was a very positive response to the reading which led to opportunities to meet with writers, directors and artistic directors of several theatre companies who focus on developing new work.
Lachlan discovered a vibrant arts scene brimming with theatre-makers who develop and produce new writing. In a brief visit, he had generated sufficient interest in San Francisco in his playwriting to forge strong connections with the staff at The Playwrights Foundation, Magic Theatre and the American Conservatory Theatre.
